Direct Mail vs. Bulk Mail

Bulk mail is taking a mail piece and distributing to as many people as possible. It is a very broad approach hoping to hit your target audience by firing a lot of bullets. It can be costly and inefficient. Direct Mail is a much more targeted and accurate approach. The goal in direct mail is to perfect the list. By perfecting the list it will take fewer bullets to hit your target. Through a review of current customer data and other information, the list can be perfected to only include good prospects for your business.

Tips to Making an Effective Marketing Piece

  1. Be Unique- make your mail piece standout. A really nice eye catching image or an effective tag line will get you noticed while others get thrown in the trash.
  2. Perfect the list- you need to make your list targeted and as specific as possible. You don’t want to waste money sending letters or postcards to people who have no use for your services. There are many list companies who can help you do this, with an analysis of an existing customer base and clear direction of where you want to go.
  3. Include a "call to action"- The mail piece should direct your new prospects or existing clients to do something like: visit your website, come in to receive a free gift, use this coupon on your next visit, or simply fill out a provided reply card. This will not only improve your response rate, but will allow you to easily measure that rate based on how many coupons you get back or free gifts you give away.
  4. Make it personal – the more personalized you can make your mail piece the better your response rate will be. Through variable data printing we can customize individual mail pieces based on information we already know about your clients or prospects.
  5. Avoid "Too Much Information"- You only have a limited amount of space and attention span to work with on a mail piece. Focus on the "big offer". Keep it simple.
